Introduction To Shopify Metafields

From your Shopify Admin, head to settings and in there you will find a section dedicated to metafields. This is where you can create and manage metafields.

You can create metafields for different parts of your store such as products, collections, blogs and etc...

When you create a metafield for products, for example, a new field will be created within your product editor dashboard and you can start filling it out for your products.

Let me put this more into perspective.

By default, whenever you are adding a new product to your store, there are some fields that you need to fill. I am talking about the title, description, price, and product photos. You fill these fields for any product you are adding and your product pages reflect this information on your product pages.

When you create a new Shopify metafield for your product pages, you create a new field that you can fill. So let's say, for example, you created a metafield called specifications.

Now when adding a new product or modifying your old products, you can fill the specification metafield for each product. This is step 1!

In order to show this field information on your product pages, you need to hear to your theme, customize your product page template, and add a new clock for the specification and like to the metafield you have created previously.

If this is too confusing, this video here will help you to understand how to use Shopify metafields and show them on your Shopify pages.

Different Types Of Shopify Metafields

Now that you have an understanding of metafields and how they work, lets discuss the different metafields types and how you can use each to improve your store.

Shopify Metafields Type #1: Date and time

With this metafield type you can create a specific date and time field for any part of your store.

So let's say for example you created this metafield for your products. Each product will have a new characteristic which is the date and time. You can use this metafield to tell your customers when a product is back in stock or when it is going to be launched.

Shopify Metafields Type #2: Measurement

This metafield type allows you to add measurements for your products. You can choose between weight, volume, and dimension and it's also a text-based meta field.

This metafield can be very useful for filters and also to organize your product's specifications.

Shopify Metafields Type #3: Number

It's a text-based meta field which means that you need to add a text block inside of your theme editor to link back to this metafield. You can choose between integer and decimal depending on what you need.

Shopify Metafields Type #4: Reference

This is one of the most useful metafields, under reference, you can choose to have a page, a file, a product, and a product variant.

You can use this metafield to recommend related products for cross-selling if you are using a theme that supports this feature, or to assign special files to products like size charts and maintenance guides.

If you are interested in adding a size chart to your product pages, you can check this video to know how to do that using metafields.

Shopify Metafields Type #5: Text

You can use it everywhere to organize and customize the text on your pages.

For example, you can add a rich text section to your product page template, create one metafield (single line type) for the title of this section and another metafield (multiple line type) for the content. This section can be your product description or some special and unique information about your product.

Shopify Metafields Type #6: URL

The final meta field I want to talk about is the URL and this one is used under the buttons it's very useful also because you can use it to link to other pages on your store or maybe to other products.

Final note

Metafields are great to help you create better pages on your store. I highly recommend you use them to improve and optimize your store.
